NATA was founded in 2007 as "The Tournament of Flash Artists". After making its move to NewGrounds, the contest updated its name to the NewGrounds Annual Tournament of Animation (NATA). The Tournament of Flash Artists has been continued by different organizers on its original sponsor site.
Prizes are contributed by NewGrounds, Munchy Media, Adobe, other sponsors, and animation community donors. NATA is a non-profit competition that is run entirely on a volunteer basis.
